Etsy fees on digital downloads for UK sellers

Last checked 9 Oct 2026. Items marked date-sensitive can change; follow the source links before relying on them.

What Etsy takes when a printable, pattern or template sells, at five price points. It also covers why buyers pay 20% more than your price, and why cheap downloads lose a much bigger share to fees.

Try your own price in the Etsy UK fee calculator (tick "Buyer is in the UK buying a digital item"), or work backwards from the margin you want with the pricing calculator.

What Etsy takes from a digital download sale date-sensitive

A digital download pays the same fees as a physical item. The difference is that there's no postage to spread the fixed charges over. The £0.15 listing fee and the £0.20 part of processing are the same on a £2 printable as on a £200 order, so cheap downloads lose a much bigger share.

The table is for a UK seller who isn't VAT-registered, selling to a UK buyer, with no Offsite Ads. Etsy adds 20% VAT to the buyer's price and pays it to HMRC itself (Etsy Help: How VAT works on digital items), so the buyer pays 20% more than your listing price and you never see that VAT.

Fees per sale: listing £0.15, transaction 6.5%, processing 4% + £0.20, Regulatory Operating Fee 0.48%, then 20% VAT on those fees. Why a range? Etsy says processing is charged on the total "including… any applicable sales tax". It doesn't say whether the VAT Etsy collects on digital items counts. The low figure charges processing on your price, the high one on the price plus VAT. The "VAT-registered" column uses the low figure and removes VAT on fees. A VAT-registered seller has other VAT questions too: see the Etsy VAT guide.

Worked example: one £3 printable

The fixed parts (£0.15 listing + £0.20 processing, plus VAT = £0.42) are over half of that. That's the main reason a £1–£3 download earns so little per sale.

The listing fee is charged on every sale

Digital listings are usually set to a high quantity. When one copy sells, Etsy renews the listing automatically and charges another $0.20 (Etsy Help: fees and taxes). So you pay a listing fee per sale, not once per listing. The table above includes it.

Offsite Ads on a digital sale

If a sale came from an Offsite Ad, add 15% of the price (12% for shops that have passed $10,000 USD in a year), plus VAT on that fee. On a £3 download that's another £0.54, which takes the total to about £1.36 (45%). Shops under the $10,000 threshold can opt out. See Etsy Offsite Ads fees for UK sellers.

FAQ

How much does Etsy take from a digital download in the UK?

For a UK seller without a VAT ID, about £0.82 on a £3 download (27%), £1.74–£1.83 on a £10 download (17–18%) and £3.06–£3.25 on £20 (15–16%). That's the listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee, 4% + £0.20 processing, the 0.48% Regulatory Operating Fee and 20% VAT on those fees. Figures checked 9 Oct 2026.

Why does the buyer pay more than my digital listing price?

Etsy adds VAT for buyers in the UK (and many other countries) on digital items delivered by automatic download, and pays it to the tax authority itself. A £10 listing costs a UK buyer £12. The extra £2 isn't yours.

Do I pay a listing fee every time a digital download sells?

Yes. When a multi-quantity listing sells, Etsy renews it automatically and charges another $0.20 listing fee.

Is there a cheaper way to sell low-price digital files on Etsy?

The fixed charges (listing fee and the £0.20 processing charge, plus VAT on both) are the same at any price. Bundling several files into one higher-priced listing pays them once instead of several times.
