GSMTD Q2 kit by GPT Shop Ltd

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax · update 2 due 7 November 2026

Turn your bank CSV into the totals for your 7 November MTD update.

For sole traders and landlords who keep their own records. Drop in a bank export, check the categories, and leave with cumulative totals in HMRC's categories plus a linked workbook your bridging software can read. Nothing is uploaded.

Update 2 due Sat 7 Nov 2026. It covers 6 April to 5 October.

Signed up by HMRC in September and starting from nothing? One export from 6 April brings you up to date, because the updates are cumulative.

Not tax advice. Checked against GOV.UK on 15 October 2026. 14-day no-questions refund.

Where you stand

What GOV.UK says about this quarter

  • Who is in now. Sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income (self-employment plus property turnover, before expenses) was over £50,000 in 2024 to 2025 should have started on 6 April 2026. Over £30,000 in 2025 to 2026 starts April 2027; over £20,000 in 2026 to 2027 starts April 2028.
  • Update 2 deadline: 7 November 2026. Standard periods cover 6 April to 5 October. Calendar periods cover 1 April to 30 September. The deadline is the same.
  • Updates are cumulative. Each one runs from the start of the tax year, so update 2 also covers what update 1 should have.
  • No penalty points for late updates in 2026 to 2027. You still need to send them before you can file your tax return.
  • HMRC is signing people up. From September 2026 HMRC started signing up people who need to use MTD and had not signed themselves up. If that's you, the 7 November update is your first, and it covers everything from 6 April.

Spreadsheets are still allowed

GOV.UK lists "linked cells in spreadsheets" and "CSV importing and exporting" as valid digital links, and describes bridging software as software that connects to records kept in spreadsheets and makes your submissions.

What you can't do is copy and paste figures between products once a record has been sent. This kit gives you a workbook whose totals are formulas over your transactions, so the link is built in.

Questions

Before you buy

Does this file my update with HMRC?

No. The kit gives you the cumulative category totals and a linked workbook. You send the update through HMRC-recognised software. If you keep spreadsheets, that is usually bridging software, which reads your sheet and submits it. HMRC lists recognised products in its software finder, where you can filter for ones that work with spreadsheets. The guide walks you through choosing and connecting one.

Free templates exist. Why pay?

A free template gives you the columns, and then you sort every bank line into a category by hand. This kit reads your bank export, sorts each line into HMRC's categories for you, flags the lines it isn't sure about, and builds the formula totals. It runs in your browser with no account. If you'd rather sort by hand, a free template will do the job.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you're not happy for any reason, email chris@gptshopltd.com within 14 days of buying for a full refund. No questions asked.

Is my bank data uploaded?

No. The page reads your CSV with your browser's FileReader and does all the sums on your device. The page's security policy only allows it to talk to tools.gptshopltd.com, and the tool sends nothing there. You can load the page, switch off Wi-Fi and it still works.

Missed the 7 August update, or HMRC signed you up in September?

You are not too late. Each update is cumulative. GOV.UK says the 7 November update covers 6 April to 5 October, so one update brings you up to date. HMRC also says it will not apply penalty points for late quarterly updates in the 2026 to 2027 tax year. Penalties still apply to late tax returns and late payment.

Which banks work?

Any bank that exports CSV with a date, a description and either one amount column or separate paid in and paid out columns. That covers the usual exports from Lloyds, NatWest, Barclays, HSBC, Monzo and Starling. If your headers are unusual, rename them Date, Description, Amount and it will read the file. Still stuck? Email chris@gptshopltd.com with the column headers (not the data). The free preview uses the same reader as the paid kit.

How accurate is the categorising?

It matches common UK payees by keyword, for example Screwfix to cost of goods and Vodafone to office costs. Anything it can't place goes to Needs your review and stays out of the totals. You check and change every category before you download. You are responsible for the figures you send.

Who you deal with

Chris Elder, founder

I built this because the 7 November update is the first one many people will actually send, and most of the effort is sorting a bank export. The kit does that part on your own computer.
